Revamping My Mustang’s Exhaust Led to an Auditory Awakening
As a lifelong gearhead and Mustang enthusiast, I’m always looking for ways to enhance my beloved ’79 Fox Body pony. While this classic boasts a healthy 302 V8 under the hood, the factory exhaust just wasn’t cutting it in terms of performance or sound. After extensive research, I decided it was time to upgrade to a Flowmaster X-pipe to really unlock the bold, throaty roar this ride was meant to have. Little did I know the transformation would far exceed my expectations!
The stock exhaust on my Mustang was practically silent, save for a muffled grumble that failed to stir any senses. Driving my prized Mustang felt mundane, leaving me yearning for that deep, rich exhaust note that screams American Muscle. The x-pipe design by the experts at Flowmaster promised major gains in sound and performance. I’ll detail my experiences installing and living with the Flowmaster x-pipe, along with the benefits it brought to my Mustang’s attitude, sound and power output. Let’s just say I’m now a Flowmaster believer for life after completely revamping my ‘Stang’s exhaust persona!
Compatibility – Not Just for Muscle Cars

While the Flowmaster X-pipe shines in classic and modern muscle cars like Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers, its benefits extend to trucks, imports, hot rods and more. I’ve heard great things about Flowmaster x-pipes paired with some unexpected applications like Nissan 350Zs, Subaru WRXs and Toyota Tacomas. The wizards at Flowmaster really know their stuff when it comes to designing X-pipe systems that bolt right up and enhance just about any ride.
Two Pipes Are Better Than One
So what makes the Flowmaster x-pipe so magical? It all comes down to the proprietary X-shaped crossover that replaces restrictive factory H-pipes or center mufflers. Rather than funneling exhaust through a single path, the flattened X shape allows two separate exhaust streams to flow together and fill up your exhaust piping more efficiently. The reduced backpressure and enhanced scavenging provides major gains in low-end torque. But the real magic is in the marmonizing pulse effect that lets your engine breathe and sing with its true unrestricted voice.
Serious Materials for Serious Upgrades

Flowmaster only uses thick, Mandrel-bent 16 gauge stainless steel for maximum durability in their x-pipe assemblies. This resists corrosion and cracking far better than flimsy aluminized steel you’ll find on cheaper designs. All welds are precise and clean, avoiding any obstructions or leaks as exhaust gases race through. And don’t worry about rapid degradation like you’d get from inferior metals. The Flowmaster x-pipe maintains its lustrous shine that you’ll be proud to show off for years to come.
The Quest for the Perfect Sound
I opted for the Flowmaster 40 series x-pipe to give my Mustang some extra bite with moderate interior resonance. The aggressively tuned Delta Flow mufflers work with the x-pipe to achieve that quintessential American V8 muscle rumble that pushes your adrenaline to redline. But Flowmaster offers various x-pipes and mufflers to customize your perfect exhaust note. Looking for a low key civilized tone? Check out the Flowfx lineup. More of a rebel with a score to settle? Go for broke with the full-throttle Super 40 or Super 44 kits. The amount of customization possible with Flowmaster components is limitless.
One Wild Weekend: Tackling My First X-Pipe Install

With my new Flowmaster 40 series x-pipe kit finally delivered, I cleared my weekend to begin the exhaust overhaul I’d been dreaming about. I won’t sugarcoat it – this was an intensive project that challenged my wrench-turning abilities. But with some perseverance and knuckle-busting labor, I got my Mustang up on jacks and the stock exhaust removed in about 4 hours.
Getting the new x-pipe aligned and bolted up took time and patience. I used a combination of band clamps and flange gaskets along with the OE hangers to get everything mated up securely. One huge plus was the precision welds on the Flowmaster x-pipe that precluded any need for adjustments or modifications during fitting. Those Flowmaster engineers know their stuff!
After getting everything buttoned back up, tightened down and aligned, it was time for the moment of truth. I turned the key, braced myself and roared to life my ‘Stang’s new voice for the first time. I literally got goosebumps as the deep burbles and growls echoed from the tailpipes. It was intoxicating! All the hard work immediately paid off hearing my Mustang come alive with a sound befitting its muscular heritage.
Exhaust Bliss

It’s been about 6 months and 15,000 miles since I completed the x-pipe install, and I’m still grinning ear to ear every time I hammer down in my Mustang. The engine feels more responsive with the reduced backpressure, delivering much stronger low-end torque. The sound remains deep, strong and unfaded – a testament to the Flowmaster x-pipe’s build quality. My Mustang went from a lame grocery-getter to a road-owning beast thanks to this one upgrade.
I’ve gotten countless compliments and questions from fellow enthusiasts about my new exhaust setup. I proudly respond that it’s a Flowmaster 40 series x-pipe system. I can’t recommend it enough to anyone looking to unlock their ride’s performance and give it a voice that demands respect. There are cheaper x-pipe options out there, but you really get what you pay for. My Flowmaster x-pipe was worth every penny and transformed my driving experience into something truly memorable.
Sound Clips Anyone?
I know there are lots of readers curious to hear the auditory magic bestowed by the Flowmaster x-pipe, so I posted some before/after clips on YouTube from my Mustang. Check out the massive difference once that x-pipe growl kicks in! Just search “Fox Body Flowmaster” to find my clips, and be sure to subscribe while you’re there! Nothing beats hearing the inline performance gains first-hand. And remember – sound is just the glorious side effect, but horsepower and torque gains are the real payoff.
Variety Is the Spice of Life

No matter what engine, make or model you drive, Flowmaster offers an x-pipe upgrade to inject some personality into your ride. They manufacture x-pipes sized from 2.25 inches to 5 inches in diameter to match any exhaust. All the necessary clamps, hangers and hardware come in the box. You can go mild or wild when pairing with different Flowmaster mufflers and tailpipes as well. It’s the ultimate recipe for creating your dream exhaust note.
California Legal? No Problem!
Despite my desire for an aggressive exhaust, I still wanted to keep the smog dude happy for inspection time. Luckily, Flowmaster designs their x-pipes and mufflers to work with factory catalytic converters so you don’t have to hack up your exhaust or risk legal issues. I love that you can have a sweet street exhaust that screams when you want it, but remains emissions compliant. Flowmaster really took the hassle out of going against the man in Cali!
Let the Pros Handle It

Trying to bust knuckles and go it alone? More power to you – it’s totally doable with basic skills. But for many, paying an exhaust shop for professional installation is money well spent. The techs can quickly fit up your new x-pipe system while ensuring perfect alignment and leak-free sealing. If shop labor rates are reasonable in your area, this option prevents a lot of frustration and frees up your weekend to actually enjoy the exhaust upgrade. Either way, be sure to use a torque wrench on all clamps and hardware during install.
Flowmaster’s Got Your Back
It brings me great peace of mind knowing my Flowmaster X-pipe comes with a limited lifetime warranty should any issues arise. While stainless steel construction ensures this product will outlast my Mustang, it’s nice having that insurance just in case. Flowmaster clearly stands behind their engineering and manufacturing process to protect their customers. Considering I’m entrusting my Mustang’s voice and performance to this x-pipe, Flowmaster’s warranty shows they value my business.
See Ya Stock Exhaust!

I can’t envision ever going back to the lifeless stock exhaust system in my Mustang after hearing the light with Flowmaster’s x-pipe upgrade. The performance gains, sound enhancement and sheer driving enjoyment are too good to forfeit. While not the cheapest modification, the x-pipe really ties my whole performance package together and gave my Mustang the bad-ass roar it was meant to have. If you’re on the fence about an X-pipe upgrade, I guarantee plunging in will liven up your ride beyond imagination. Your senses and inner gearhead will thank you!
